2012 + 3 Words = Success

I love lists. There – I said it. Grocery lists, packing lists, to do lists; I am a bit O.C.D. about organizing my plans. So then, it should be no surprise that I am a New Year’s resolution maker. I don’t do it because it’s the “in” thing to do or because I can’t set goals any other time of year. The end of the year just seems like a finite end to a period of time that I can look back on and determine what I can and should do better – and a new year to look forward to growing, learning and setting new goals for… and making a list.

Several years ago I learned of Chris Brogan’s “3 Words” technique.  Chris challenges people to skip resolutions, and instead, come up with 3 words that will help define their goals and experiences for the coming year. I have never participated in his challenge because “3 Words” isn’t much of a list – and, again, I love lists.  But this year I felt like I needed focus rather than a laundry list of “things to do”-type resolutions… and this seems like just the way to find that focus.

So without further ado, here are my 3 Words for 2012: http://aprillynnescott.wordpress.com/2012/01/03/2012-3-words-success/

A New Year - A New Hope

In the words of a good friend & author, Ashley Crownover, “What a beautiful, heartbreaking, life-affirming, agonizing, unimaginably transformative year this has been.”

Each year, in these final moments, we are given a gift. The gift of hope.  A chance to reflect on the lessons we’ve learned that propel us into a better tomorrow - a new year. A chance to reinvent ourselves, make amends for transgressions, soak in the beautiful and rid ourselves of the ugly, offer forgiveness to ourselves and to others, and resolve to rebecome ourselves in a more powerful, purposeful way.

We have this moment to appreciate, remember, regret and resolve.  We have this gift.  This gift to treasure those who celebrate the entrance of the new year beside us and remember those who are here only in our hearts.

Accept this gift.  Breathe in this moment.  Fully feel, fully love, fully live with the intent of savoring this moment and taking this opportunity with us into the new year.

Happy New Year to all of my dear friends and family. I wish for you love, peace, happiness, success and a year filled with more blessings than your lives can hold.

Social Feedia

The holidays mean getting social in the original sense of the word… spending time with family and friends that know what you’re going to tweet before you tweet it…

My Christmas Eve morning kicked off with a a home-cooked breakfast and a strong-brewed cup of coffee. Time in the kitchen spent rolling Cream Cheese Meltaways into little balls before dipping them in a lemon glaze was a great way to wrap up the morning.

As the little snowball-shaped Meltaways began to disappear a winning appetizer recipe was already in the works… courtesy of the New York Giants.

Christmas Eve dinner included prime rib. Slow-roasted with a salt crust…

…medium rare on the edges and rare in the center - Mmmmm…

…with a side of garlic cinnamon mashed sweet potatoes and an arugula salad with locally grown tomato.

And now, completely satiated after a delicious meal, we all retire to our places in front of our laptops, tablets and cell phones to commence sharing holiday wishes with our social networks.  But what’s that?  The smell of cinnamon coming from the kitchen? Did someone say Bread Pudding… with meringue and whiskey cream sauce?  Social media will have to wait -

It’s beginning to smell alot like Christmas…

The weather outside is frightful… and warm. But inside the scents of the season fill the air.  Cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg… Mmmmmmmm - the smells of Christmas.  The perfect combination of these flavors & smells all rolled into a delicious crispy & chewy oatmeal cookie with pecans -

1 cup butter; room temp
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup white sugar
2 tsp vanilla
2 eggs; room temp
1 1/2 cups flour
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp cloves
1/8 tsp nutmeg
1 tsp baking soda
3 cups quick-cooking rolled oats
1 cup pecans (chopped)

Spread pecans on a cookie sheet and bake in a 350 degree oven until toasted.  Sprinkle with a cinnamon/sugar mixture if desired.  While pecans are cooling, combine dry ingredients; set aside.

Add pecans to dry mixture once cooled.  Cream butter and sugars together until fluffy, 2-3 min. Add vanilla and eggs and mix until well combined. Add dry ingredients and mix just until combined. Stir in oats. Drop onto greased or lined cookie sheets.

Bake at 350 degrees -10-12 minutes.

Happy Holidays!

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE INANIMATE OBJECT?
tumblrbot asked

My over-sized “favorite quote” coffee mug.  When it’s full it keeps me warm and offers a moment to breathe & sit silently with my roast of choice - When it’s empty it asks me “What would you do if you knew you could not fail?” (and reminds me that it’s time for a refill)
